Internet and Mobile Phone Carriers’ offerings to help Georgians in the response to COVID-19

The providers listed below have taken steps to address connectivity needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Keep reading to learn more and click your provider for additional details. 

This is not a complete list of all companies that are offering free and low-cost internet options but it reflects the information we have collected as of March 28, 2020. If you are a service provider that is offering free or low-cost options for high-speed internet during this time and would like to have your company included here, please contact us at broadband@dca.ga.gov.

Georgia Providers:

AT&T

  • AT&T will continue to offer internet access for qualifying limited income households at $10 a month through the “Access from AT&T” program. 
  • Waive domestic wireless plan overage charges for data, voice or text for residential or small business wireless customers incurred because of economic hardship related to the coronavirus pandemic. The current commitment is for 60 days
  • AT&T is underwriting expenses for a resource center to support eLearning Days from the State Educational Technology Directors Association available to all educators to help them handle school closures and the increase in virtual learning due to COVID-19.
  • Created a $10M Distance Learning and Family Connections fund for to provide at-home learning resources for parents, students and teachers
  • *Signed Keep America Connected" pledge

Charter Communications​

Comcast

  • Comcast’s Xfinity WiFi hotspots are located in many Georgia communities and Comcast has opened up access free-of-charge to anyone who has a device that can connect to the signal, including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers
  • Offering two free months of service to new Internet Essentials customers, which is available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month plus tax. Apply by April 30.

Cox Communications

  • Offering $19.99 package for new Starter Internet customers to help low-income customers and those impacted from COVID-19 challenges such as seniors and college students (through May 15)
  • Offering the first month of service free to new customers of Connect2Complete, a low-cost internet product for families with school-aged children enrolled in low-income assistance programs to ensure digital equity for students lacking home internet access
  • Schools can email connectnow@cox.com with a list of eligible low-income students that currently do not have an internet connection.

Windstream

Sprint

  • Providing unlimited data for 60 days to customers with metered data plans and 20GB of free mobile hotspots to customers who have hotspot-capable devices (as of March 18).

T-Mobile

  • Developed T-Mobile Connect, an affordable service offering, and is working with their Lifeline partners to automatically provide customers up to 5GB of LTE data for free as part of their current voice-only plans (through May 13).

Verizon

  • From March 25 through April 30, Verizon is adding 15GB of high speed data for wireless consumers and small business customers to be automatically applied with no customer action necessary. This applies to any data-capable device. 
  • For 60 days, Verizon will not terminate service to any residential or small business customers because of their inability to pay their bills due to disruptions caused by COVID-19
  • For 60 days, Verizon will waive overage charges and late fees to support customers who may be financially affected by the COVID-19 crisis
  • From March 18 through April 30, Verizon will offer free international calling to countries identified by the Centers for Disease Control as level 3 impacted by COVID-19 coronavirus, with the exception of Iran, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia, which will be provided 300 minutes of free calls per month. This is available to all wireless postpaid and small and medium business. Prepaid customers will receive a total of 300 additional minutes to call level 3 countries, starting March 19.

Georgia Telecommunications Association

  • Several of Georgia’s telecommunications companies are suspending shutoffs and late fees for one month, after which policies will be reassessed.
  • Several companies are continuing internet installations and internet outage service repairs, in addition to waiving installation fees and working with school districts to open Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • Several members have signed the "Keep Americans Connected" pledge

Georgia EMC

  • Many of the state’s 41 electric membership corporations (EMC) have offered temporary payment policies and alternative payment methods as well as modified business procedures based on CDC and healthcare provider recommendations
  • Information and updates related to individual EMC efforts during COVID are being communicated directly to their members through EMC websites and social media channels
